Strawberry Lassi – Working to calm down

Strawberry LassiLassi’s or yogurt smoothies are a go to breakfast for me. Usually just fruit, homemade yogurt and a tiny piece of ginger. And for my strawberry lassi I also add a little fresh turmeric.  If you like this, you can check out my mango lassi and papaya lassi as well.

The Story Behind Strawberry Lassi

This Sunday is different. We have a break from both the children’s dance and soccer. We instead have a  visit my husband’s cousin. It is also the Sunday following the PTA fundraising event. This means a houseful of envelopes with all kinds of small money to count, organize and deliver to the bank.

I think that the husband sensed my lack of enthusiasm and decided to be nice, he agreed to get the kids out to the cousin, who live about 30 miles east and leave me alone for the day. As he mentioned, he thought I could use the peace.

My daughter a bookworm had just gotten a new book from the school book fair. My son had a new camera toy or a toy camera, with which he insisted on capturing anything that caught his fancy and was therefore gainfully engaged. So, as my husband mentioned the trip would work out for everyone, except himself, he added with a rueful smile.

I tried hard not to show my extreme delight at having an entire Sunday to myself. Everyone left the house, I spent about an hour sorting out the papers and then I was ready to do a whole bunch of things that I cannot usually get to uninterrupted. I was about to begin making a list, when I realized that I did not have my phone. Kept on low usage on weekends, its rectangular dark presence provides familiar comfort. An unconscious but firm fixture in my life.

I searched high and low and finally it dawned on me that I had somehow dropped the phone last evening when I was out. Visits to the grocery store and the bank for enquiries offered me no luck.

I first felt silly, angry and then a sense of loss.  This is followed by range of visions of someone calling everyone in my address book. My attachment to the devise surprised me. That stupid thing contained half my life. Finally, I missed everyone and wondered why I had not joined them, anyway. At least someone other than my son’s stuffed toys would hear me if I ranted. As if to remind me, that he could hear, my cat offered a low meow and shifted in his sleep.

I looked out of the window to see a bright clear day, a gentle breeze blowing throw the flowering pear tree and the bright and vivid yellows of the daffodils.  They offered me a sense of grounding. Allowing me to feel that a lost phone is not the end of the world.

I took a long walk across the neighborhood and came back and decided to make something simple to welcome the family with. I settle on the lovely and refreshing lassi, a yogurt smoothie with light seasoning( and if desired fruit). My version today is made with strawberries.

PS. The next morning, when I was getting ready to drop by son to the bus stop the cat ran out, my son ran after the cat and I ran after them. Less than a yard later, we stopped and in the corner by the driveway, I found the phone that clearly had somehow dropped out of my pocket. Happiness ensued as I picked it up and salvaged the remains of the Sunday.
